The Red River exhibition took place June 13th-22nd.  The MSA participate in the Ex's Touch the Farm. This  brings the farm to the city kids. We were there along with Pork, Dairy, Beef, Egg and Chicken Producers. It's quite the set-up with Dairy having the pipeline and bulktank set-up and actually milking cows. The Egg producers having the whole cage set-up and the chicken producers had some eggs hatching there.
We had  a yearling ewe with twin lambs along with 2, 2year old rams along with displays. We gave away "Fun Fact Sheets on Raising Sheep"
It's great to get the interaction with people who never get to see sheep farms along with our customers and potential customers. We got to answer many questions and bring visibility to our industry. This is a very affordable project that can pay huge dividends to sheep producers in the long run. We can repeat this next year as long as we get volunteers. Plan on attending the Ex. next time and volunteer some time for YOUR association.

Thanks to all who volunteered to helped make this a reality.

Regards,

Eugène

2007 All Canada Classic Report

As the numbers regarding the sales average show, the 2007 All Canada Classic was a success. Some would have liked to see higher prices but all-in-all most rams and ewes sold well.

What I found most impressive was the way sheep producers from Vancouver Island to P.E.I. gathered here in Manitoba to Show and Sell their sheep. Some of them brought with them bloodlines and genetics that weren’t common to here or other parts of the country. The Classic allowed these genetics to be spread to flock where some bloodlines were overused. Some local purebred and commercial producers understood the value of these new bloodlines being available here. The producers which added these new bloodlines to their flock will see the benefits for years to come.

Besides the exchange of genetics at the Classic, the socializing amongst these Canadian Shepherds was quite impressive. Friends are made while old acquaintances are renewed with people who have common interests from coast to coast. This was most evident in the “sale barn” and at the wine and cheese which was attended by over 100 people. The banquet was attended by 112 people who were treated to an excellent buffet.

Mr. Ian Clark spoke on the International trade of Canadian Sheep Genetics. The Woolgrowers presented awards of merit for different fleeces.

The Manitoba Sheep Association feels privileged to have had the honour of hosting the 2007 All Canada Classic. We’d like to thank the Canadian Sheep Breeders’ Association for allowing us to host the Classic and also for supporting a province which has one of the lowest purebred sheep numbers.

We’d like to thank the consignors and buyers which came from far and near.

A special thanks to all our sponsors.
  • The Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba
  • The Canadian Woolgrowers Cooperative
  • Heartland (Brandon)
  • Roy Leitch

Plus all the other sponsors which are listed in the sales catalogue.

To the volunteers, job well done and THANK-YOU!

The 2008 Classic will be held in the London, Ontario area.
